Bifidobacterium infantis

Bifidobacterium infantis is today taxonomically classified as Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis, a subspecies of B. longum, but in research and everyday use it is usually shortened to Bifidobacterium infantis.

Four key strains, two lost species – a stable microbiome

With L. reuteri and B. infantis, the set contains two clearly identified Lost Species, i.e., microbes that have largely disappeared from modern gut ecosystems. L. gasseri is among the strains particularly known for weight regulation and mucosal protection, while B. subtilis, as a spore former, is exceptionally stable and supports the gut barrier as well as the immune system. Together they form a strong combination for a resilient microbiome.

What happens during backslopping?

A finished yogurt can be used multiple times as a starter.

However, over several generations, the culture can change. Spontaneous mutations, contamination, or the selection of faster-growing subspecies cause the effect to diminish. Dr. William Davis, who developed the method, recommends a fresh start with new capsules after at most 20 batches. This preserves the physiological activity of the bacteria.

Why 20 generations?

Food microbiological studies show that lactic acid bacteria can genetically change after about 10 to 30 passages.
